Welcome to Play The Poet, a business venture of mine that’s been waiting expectantly in the back of my mind to be acted upon, like an impatient child, for several years.

Creating poetry, including all forms, shapes, rhythms and rhyme schemes, is a passion I never thought I’d be able to pursue as a practical, commercial hobby – but among the many lessons 2020 taught us all, I think the one that struck me most is that life is unpredictably short. Far too short, in fact, to excuse abandoning something that brings you so much joy, for fear of failure (or due to surrendering to the illusion of having too little time).

My Mission

Play The Poet is a new way to share and celebrate poetry with friends and loved ones. Personalised pieces are created upon request, and can be in virtually any style, about virtually any subject. To get yours, all you need to do is fill out a request form, available on my Contact Page.

My aim for this project is for it to develop from a hobby into something tangible – a way to learn from people and listen to their stories, help to create beautiful pieces of work and gifts that can be treasured forever, and above all, inspire you to play with words.

The Gift of Poetry

A personalised poem can be a gift like no other. Whether you or a loved one are celebrating another trip around the sun, an anniversary, a wedding, a new home… poems, with their concise form and delightfully descriptive wording, can put so much more life into a declaration of joy, love or even loss. Poems are songs from the deepest depths of the heart – even if it’s a few rhyming couplets about a pet cat.

Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas stemming from themes I have previously covered. If you’d like me to write about something different or more specific, all you have to do is go to my Contact Page and fill out the request form.

  • Birthday poems

Take My Word For It

Why trust me, a poet in her 20’s with nothing but a handful of small poetry-based achievements to her name? Well, I would argue that the same question could be asked of any online service. Take a look at my About The Poet page for more personal information about me, which will perhaps at least convince you that I’m not a conniving, money-grabbing con artist.

Perhaps these recent accreditations will help to put your mind at rest:

  • Shortlisted – Erbacce Prize
  • Winner – Lancaster University Poetry Portfolio of the Year
  • Runner Up – Portico Poetry Prize
  • Runner Up – Poetry By Heart Nationals
